What is myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, causes distant objects—such as the board at school—to appear blurred. Myopia often develops during childhood and can progress as a child grows, resulting in increasingly stronger spectacle prescriptions over time.
Both genetic and environmental factors can influence myopia. Its prevalence is increasing worldwide, with approximately half of the world’s population predicted to be myopic by 2050.
Myopia control, also known as myopia management, refers to treatments designed to slow myopia progression and reduce excessive growth of the eye. Slowing progression may help reduce the risk of myopia-related eye conditions later in life.
Why Optometrists want to slow down the progression of myopia?
The greater the myopia (over -5.00 dioptres), the greater the risk of eye problems such as retinal detachment, macular degeneration, cataract and glaucoma in later life. Airedale Opticians are currently the only practice in Yorkshire able to monitor the treatment with specialist equipment that allows us to chart the growth of the eye (axial length measurement) using the Topcon Myah Screener.
