Myopia Control

What is Myopia Control?

Myopia is short sight, when distant objects appear blurred. In growing children, short sight can progressively worsen, meaning that a child will have to wear stronger glasses in adulthood and it can also lead to long term eye health issues

Myopia Control is the use by optometrists of different techniques to try and slow or even stop this worsening short sight in children.

Airedale Opticians have been treating myopia for many years and is the only practice in Yorkshire able to monitor the treatment with specialist equipment that allows us to track the growth of the eye (axial length biometry*).

We allow more time for our children’s appointments, giving our optometrists a better chance to identify and monitor your child’s short sight over time – read more about our children’s eye examination

*Using the Topcon Myah Biometery

Myopia Control Clinic at Airedale Opticians

Using specialist Topcon Myah equipment, our Optometrists at Airedale Opticians are able to CORRECT and TREAT progressive myopia. Our Myopia Control Clinic allows us to measure the axial length growth of the eye and plot a chart (similar to a child’s red book growth charts) to determine the risk of high myopia. We can then see the effect of normal glasses wear and eye growth versus treatment of the myopia and axial length eye growth.

Myopia Control With Multifocal spectacle lenses

Myopia control can also be achieved with the use of bifocal and Varifocal lenses for children. Although not as effective as the more specialised techniques, it has been shown to slow the progression of myopia and provides an additional option.
