At Airedale Opticians, Gill Thorp provides a dedicated 90-minute Low Vision Assessment for people whose eyesight is affecting everyday life.
The aim is to help you maintain as much independence and confidence as possible and continue doing the things you enjoy.
Your Low Vision Assessment
Gill will take time to understand your eyesight and, importantly, how your vision affects your everyday life.
She will discuss difficulties you may have with:
• Reading and close work
• Watching television
• Using phones, tablets and computers
• Recognising faces
• Shopping, cooking and household tasks
• Hobbies and activities
• Lighting and glare
• Getting around independently
Together, you’ll identify the activities that matter most and look at practical ways of making them easier.
Magnifiers & Low Vision Aids
We stock a wide range of modern magnifiers and low vision aids for you to try during your appointment.
Gill can assess the magnification you need and demonstrate different options, including illuminated and stand magnifiers, specialist lenses and E-Scoop lenses.
She can also advise on lighting, glare, contrast and simple changes around the home that may make everyday tasks easier.
Technology & Ray-Ban Meta
Technology can also help people with reduced vision.
We offer Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and can demonstrate how their camera, audio and voice-controlled features may assist with certain everyday tasks.
Importantly, we don’t just supply them – we’ll help connect them to your smartphone, set them up and show you how to use them.
Gill can also advise on useful accessibility features on your phone or tablet, including larger text, magnification and increased contrast.
Support Beyond the Practice
Sight loss can affect confidence, independence and emotional wellbeing as well as vision.
Gill can discuss these concerns and, where appropriate, refer or signpost you to other sight-loss services, rehabilitation services and support groups.
