DRY AMD Treatment at Airedale Opticians
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that primarily affects older adults, resulting in central vision loss. The macula, a central part of the retina, is responsible for straight-ahead vision and plays a crucial role in activities such as reading, driving, and recognising faces.
There are two main types of AMD, Dry AMD and Wet AMD.

Traditional Treatments for Dry AMD
Historically, there has been no treatment available for dry AMD. Instead, patients have been encouraged to make lifestyle adjustments to help slow disease progression and lower the risk of developing the wet form. These recommendations include taking specific vitamins and minerals, maintaining a healthy diet, and protecting the eyes from ultraviolet light.
How do we treat Dry AMD?
Using Light Therapy or Photobiomodulation, research has shown the progression of Dry AMD can be slowed. This safe, non-invasive method uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate the cells in your retina, helping them to clear waste and function more effectively.
The process, known as Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), has been shown in clinical studies to:
Stimulate photoreceptor activity
Reduce harmful waste build-up
Improve visual performance
Significantly slow the progression of early-to-mid-stage Dry AMD
Clinical Research Results
Clinical studies, including the LIGHTSITE III trial, have shown:
Improved Visual Acuity: Many patients experienced measurable improvements in their vision.
Slowed Progression: Light therapy helped delay the worsening of Dry AMD in early and intermediate cases.
Enhanced Retinal Function: The treatment supports healthier retinal cells, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.
